Blackbeard’s Ranch is a ranch in Myakka, Florida. Their mission is among the more noble in the increasingly corporatized world of meat agriculture. They focus on humane conditions for their animals, old style cattle ranching, true land stewardship, and educating the public about the intimate relationship between agriculture and ecology. In addition to cattle, they raise pigs, chickens, and bees.
Objectives and Challenges
This project was a relatively straight forward website re-design. As their organization is growing, they wanted a website that was positioned to grow with them. Aside from wanting an update to address mobile browsing, they may want to add sales, calendars, and other functions to their site. Their new visually rich website design deployed in WordPress positions them to more easily scale their web presence to accommodate a multitude of options.

Responsive Design
As with many clients, the previous website for Blackbeard’s was built before the widespread use of mobile devices. As such, a primary goal of this project was to provide a responsive design. Now, their website scales to effectively render in all the major device dimensions.
Message Clarity
As this organization grows, we saw that it would be necessary to strip away unneeded information/navigation and focus their message. So we did just that: we reduced their sitemap and content to drive their main messages, positioned content for easy access, and considered scalability for future features.
Strong Visual Message
The best way to drive home the simple and effective land and animal management techniques was through images. To that end, Max spent hours at the ranch capturing images that reflect the mission, ideals, and work of the people that run the ranch. This is something that simply could not be conveyed through stock imagery.
